The next morning, Blue did not see her parents. It was Sunday, so Blue left early to go to work. She had avoided them all afternoon and on Monday morning Blue had stayed in her room pretending to be asleep until both of them had gone off to work. She had been in a bad mood all through her shift.
She made her way to Howell’s Bookshop once her shift was over. Blue knew Jasper and Darren would be working, but she made her way inside anyway. The little bell at the top of the door rang as she pushed it open. She immediately noticed Darren at the main counter, completing a purchase from an old lady. The bookshop seemed to buzz with activity at this time of the afternoon, which was unusual since it was almost always empty.
Blue waved awkwardly at Darren before making her way towards her usual table. She looked around, trying to see if she could locate Jasper, but he didn’t seem to be around.
Taking a seat, Blue took out her sketchbook and pencils and started to sketch something. She didn’t know what she wanted to draw. All she knew was that she needed to take her mind off the discussion with her parents and how tense her house had been in the past days. Blue stayed there for a long time, making lines and curves on her sketchbook. She didn’t know how long she had been there when, suddenly, someone took a seat right across from her. She looked up to find Jasper sitting there, a cloth-bound book in his hands. He smiled at her when their eyes met and then nodded at her sketchbook.
“You look stressed,” Jasper said.
“I supposed I’m a bit stressed,” Blue sighed.
“What’s in your mind?”
“I…” Blue hesitated to tell him for a moment.
She didn’t usually talk about this kind of stuff, she preferred to keep it quiet and work on it by herself. But she was trying to do better. She needed to do better, Blue reminded herself, and that meant trusting other people. That’s what friends were supposed to do.
“I had a fight with my parents on Saturday,” Blue started, “Well...it wasn’t a real fight. More like a discussion. We just disagreed about some things.”
“That happens sometimes,” Jasper replied. “What did you fight about?”
“They want me to...start working or something.” Blue frowned.
“What about your job at The Coffeehouse?” Jasper said confused “You already have a job.”
“That’s what I told them! But they don’t think it is a proper job,” Blue shook her head “They want me to take something more serious and professional or some crazy thing like that. And I told them I didn’t want that! I like my job at The Coffeehouse. I mean, I know I won’t stay there my whole life, but for the moment it’s good enough for me. They just don’t seem to care about that.”
“I’m sure they do,” Jasper tried to comfort her, “Our parents always want what is best for us, sometimes it just seems different.
